Oscar Winner Sam Smith Had A Terrible Time At The Oscars

Sam Smith took home his first Academy Award yesterday (February 28), but that didn’t stop him from having a terrible night.

The “Stay With Me” singer performed his James Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall” early in the evening at the 88th Academy Awards under a stark spotlight. He kept his composure, but his voice sounded a little off — and later, he’d tell the BBC that he felt terrible during the performance.

“It was the worst moment of my life,” he said. “Singing was horrible. I hated every minute.”

Whether he was being ironic or not, things didn’t exactly improve for Smith once he won the Oscar for Best Original Song. He shouted out the LGBTQ community, but then he also suggested that he was the first openly gay man to ever win an Oscar, misquoting an interview with Ian McKellan that pointed out how no Best Lead Actor winners have ever been openly gay.

Smith recouped afterwards by claiming to be the second-ever openly gay Oscar winner — which, sorry Sam, also isn’t true. Elton John is one big name that comes to mind, and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black had some choice words (and a link to his acceptance speech) for Smith on Twitter.

If nothing else, we can at least hope that Smith has learned to fact check his acceptance speeches from now on.
